There will be seasons of life when working out at home is simply the most convenient option. If you have little kids like I do, getting to the gym every day may not be realistic. A home setup allows you to stay consistent, move your body on your own schedule and keep your routine flexible as life changes.
You do not need a fancy setup or even a dedicated room to build an effective home gym. With a few versatile pieces of equipment, you can create a space that supports strength training, mobility work and full body conditioning, all without breaking the bank.
If you are just getting started, focus on simple and durable tools that give you the most options for workouts. My go to essentials include:
Dumbbells: Whether you choose adjustable dumbbells or a few individual pairs, these will be the backbone of your home strength routine. You can progress weight over time, build muscle and hit every major muscle group.
Long Loop Resistance Bands: These are incredible for warm ups, mobility work, assisted or resisted exercises and adding intensity without needing more heavy weights, and more budget friendly than a new set of dumbbells.
Mini Loop Bands: Perfect for glute work, core activation and adding extra burn to lower body exercises. I love using these with my postpartum and pregnant mamas and really anyone learning to engage their core properly.
A Bench or Workout Box: This opens the door to step ups, hip thrusts, incline and decline pressing, Bulgarian split squats and dozens of other variations.
Sliders or Gliders:A small but mighty addition. They make core training and bodyweight exercises more challenging without taking up any space. If you know me you KNOW I LOVE a hamstring slider exercise!
Exercise Mat: One thing I forgot that most of us might already have is an exercise mat! I've seen really big ones on Amazon and Walmart for a decent price and that way if you have a partner, friend or even your kids joining you there's room for all without damaging your floors.
The best part is that you do not have to spend a fortune. Check Facebook Marketplace for secondhand equipment, especially benches and dumbbells. For budget friendly new items, Amazon and Walmart consistently offer good options with quick shipping. If you've ever been in my home gym you'll know that these three places have built my gym minus the squat rack and cable machine!
How to Set Up Your Home Gym Space
Creating a home gym does not require a full room or expensive flooring. A small, intentional setup can go a long way. Here are a few simple steps:
Choose a consistent space: Pick a corner of a bedroom, basement, office or living room. Consistency helps with routine and motivation.
Use a small shelf or bin for storage: Keep your dumbbells, bands and sliders organized in one spot so you never waste time searching for equipment.
Use a mat or rug for traction: A simple exercise mat protects your floors, adds grip and defines your workout area.
Prioritize lighting and airflow: Good lighting boosts energy, and a fan or open window helps keep workouts comfortable.
Keep it simple and inviting: Too much clutter kills motivation. Keep only what you need and create a space you look forward to using.
I hope this helps! Creating a home gym space is what brought me consistency after baby #3 and what has helped me build my business over the last 5 years.
